Volkswagen's long anticipated new Touareg Launch Edition SUV is in showrooms this week with more power, luxury and equipment and vastly more advanced technology than the comparable outgoing model.

And the new one costs almost a grand less than the old one.

The Launch Edition's recommended retail price of $89,990 comes in $900 under the ask for the previous generation Touareg 180TDI when equipped with Driver Assistant pack.

Yet the new Touareg Launch Edition carries these advantages over its well-regarded predecessor:

Volkswagen's Director of Customer Experience and Marketing Jason Bradshaw said that the Touareg

Launch Edition is the vanguard of the third generation Touareg range.

"This Touareg is the most luxurious SUV yet from Volkswagen, one that can be legitimately compared with group stablemates, with which it shares much more than mere underpinnings, in addition to rivals from Mercedes-Benz and BMW," Mr Bradshaw said.

"The Touareg is better-priced than all of these."

The new Touareg is based on the design platform of the modular longitudinal matrix (MLB) shared with Audi and Porsche. Emphatic but efficient performance is ensured by the 190kW/600Nm V6 turbo diesel driven through 8-speed automatic gearbox and torque sensing 4MOTION all-wheel-drive.

The distinctive design features the debut of the "IQ. Light" matrix LED headlight. The matrix is formed with 128 individually controllable LEDs. The beam pattern is individually adapted to each driving situation as it illuminates the road to ensure maximum, high precision and dazzle-fee illumination of the road.

Front Cross Traffic Assist uses radar technology to detect vehicles approaching from the side, providing invaluable assistance when nosing out of blind exits and junctions. Sensors monitor the area in front of your car issuing optical and acoustic warnings of any cross traffic. If a car outside your field of vision approaches the system implements an emergency stop to avoid a collision Predictive Pedestrian Protection is a camera and radar sensor controlled warning system to detect pedestrians on, or on the edge of, the road. First the system alerts the driver to prepare for emergency braking. If no response is detected and a collision is imminent, the system automatically emergency brakes. The system also detects cyclists for the first time.

Eighteen-way electrically adjustable front seats with memory including pneumatic side bolsters in the seat cushion and backrest. A special massage function uses ten pneumatic air pillows which inflate up to 6cm to provide 8 different pre-set massage programs: Waves (back, lumbar & shoulder) Circles, Upward strokes, Tapping, Relax & Vital. The front seats are heated and feature seat ventilation. The user can vary the heat and ventilation between the backrest and seat cushion to get the perfect balance for the ultimate comfort.
