More than just the embodiment of a concept car, the RCZ Sports Coupé marks a new stage in the line up of Peugeot's "leisure vehicles", whilst also being the first Peugeot product to benefit from the latest Peugeot Lion brand identity.
The Peugeot RCZ, a sporty and compact 2+2 coupé, is designed as exclusive, a "something special" vehicle, exuding a tangible air of excitement. Its name, RCZ, symbolises its singular position in relation to the Peugeot range: it is the first specialist car not to utilise the numbering system with a central or double zero; – illustrating the Marque's "new identity".
Its expressive and innovative style, exclusive interior, dynamic and environmentally-friendly engines and the driving enjoyment it produces, propel the Peugeot brand, buoyed by 200 years of history, into a future which promises more emotion than ever.
The RCZ is aimed at the modern customer, particularly demanding and well informed when it comes to cars, they seek to stand out… and are ready to succumb to automotive temptation.
As such, the RCZ is the first exclusive vehicle of the Peugeot range and will be followed by other exclusive models in the years to come - all distinctive, all with a specific character - building on strong personality and a promise of innovative motoring enjoyment.
STAGE ONE
The first stage of the RCZ project began in September 2007, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, when Peugeot unveiled a concept car which excited all who saw it, born of the passion and expertise from the designers and engineers at Peugeot.
The decision to commit it for production was taken shortly thereafter and announced at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2008.
However, making the RCZ dream a reality called for determination, boldness and a vast amount of inventiveness. While the primary intention was to conserve the stylistic blueprint of the concept, despite the challenge of incorporating the constraints inherent in its production and commercialisation, the challenge went far beyond this.
Ambitious targets were set in terms of driveability and production quality to give it an extremely strong and very specific identity.
STAGE TWO
Another challenge was to develop the RCZ in a reasonably short time span. To do this, the vehicle was assembled at a production centre specialising in exclusive vehicles built in relatively small volume production runs at the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria.
As a result, just two years after the decision was made to go ahead with its development, the RCZ will now be available for sale in Australia from October 1st 2010.
ENGINEERING EMOTION
With its reduced weight, finely honed aerodynamics and modern engine technologies, the RCZ offers an innovative balance of performance and environmental friendliness. The range of engines/transmissions available in 2010 in Australia will be as follows:
- 1.6 litre turbo petrol 147kW Euro 5 SIX SPEED MANUAL
- 1.6 litre turbo petrol 115kW Euro 5 TIPTRONIC AUTOMATIC SIX SPEED
- 2.0 litre HDi turbodiesel 120kW Euro 5 SIX SPEED MANUAL
The Peugeot RCZ range of engines has to not only to live up to the standards of the vehicle itself but also satisfy the demands of modern drivers who are "experts" in driving pleasure.
The answer lies in the choice of engines which are powerful in every sense of the word: generous torque and power, limited fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions.
To provide a new driving experience, the Peugeot RCZ has distilled all of Peugeot's expertise in terms of handling and road holding and the Peugeot RCZ has a low centre of gravity, with wide front and rear tracks and reinforced suspension and wheels – guaranteeing driving pleasure.
EXTERIOR EMOTION
Athletic, elegant and aerodynamic, the style of the RCZ offers a new experience and energy derived from the original architecture. The sensuality of the car's double bubble roof and rear windscreen combine with its two aluminium arches to produce its most distinctive features.
At the 2009 International Automobile Festival the RCZ won hands down in front of the BMW Z4, Citroen DS3 and Nissan 370Z to take the highest honour – The Most Beautiful Car of the Year. By winning this prestigious award – the fourth time for Peugeot - the RCZ strikingly perpetuates the tradition of pleasure vehicles that have shaped Peugeot's image and history, while holding out great promise for the future.
INTERIOR EMOTION
An ideal driving position, a fluid and streamlined fascia panel, traditional and high-tech materials - the passenger compartment of the RCZ instantly immerses the driver in an elite sporting ambience. The RCZ is also practical, offering two occasional rear seats whose backrests can be folded to open up a boot with a generous capacity in this category (from 384 litres to 760 litres).
Meticulous attention has been paid to the style of each interior component and the elegance of the materials used. Whether it's the leather finish with double overstitching or the use of chromed or aluminium inserts, each piece has been produced with the utmost of care.
DYNAMIC EMOTION
Expressing all of Peugeot's expertise in terms of road holding, the RCZ provides a thrilling experience with precision and driveability, creating a sense of real excitement and occasion for the driver.
The RCZ benefits from a strong base – that of the "platform 2" architecture (MacPherson type front suspension, rear suspension with deformable crossmember). It also has a particularly low ride height and centre of gravity, wider tracks and generous wheel dimensions (18" or 19" diameter).
The RCZ can be specified with the 147 kW engine. Uniquely to this version, the front suspension incorporates a special lower anti-collision bar to give the car even livelier and more agile handling response, while guaranteeing exceptional stability.
To match its dynamic, exclusive positioning, and in addition to its stylish and mechanical innovations, the RCZ comes equipped with sophisticated equipment and driving aids to ensure both peace of mind and safety while driving: intelligent traction control as standard with ESP, Hill Assist (as standard), top of the range audio system, directional bi-Xenon headlamps and more.
PART ONE: THE EMOTIONS OF STYLE
Following the Frankfurt Motor show the idea of marketing the car on a commercial basis quickly became a reality.
The transformation from concept car to production vehicle required real determination, boldness and inventiveness.
Peugeot stylists and engineers worked in unison to ensure that all of the specifications lived up to the promise delivered by its exterior styling. Indeed while the main aim was to conserve the stylistic blueprint of the concept, despite the considerable constraints imposed by its production and commercialisation, the challenge went much further. Highly ambitious targets were fixed in terms of driveability and production quality, to give the car its own strong and unmistakable identity.
This compact 2+2 coupé was, therefore, designed to become an exclusive vehicle, "something special", a fusion of emotions, aimed at a modern and particularly demanding customer with extensive opinions on what constitutes driving pleasure.
Its name, RCZ, symbolises this distinctive and singular positioning in relation to the Peugeot range, since it is the first passenger vehicle not to use the numbering system with a central "zero" or "double zero". The RCZ therefore illustrates the sum of Peugeot values, which are constantly realigned with the times.
Designed to enhance the pure enjoyment of driving, the RCZ is also responsible, offering an innovative blend of performance with environmental-friendliness. With its reduced weight, fine-tuned aerodynamics and modern engine technology for example the 2.0 litre HDi version has CO2 emissions of only 139 grams per kilometre.
Another challenge the project faced was to successfully develop this new vehicle within a particularly short time span. With this in mind, it was decided the vehicle would be assembled at a production centre that specialises in exclusive vehicles built in small production runs, inside the Magna Steyr plant in Graz, Austria.
As a result, just two years after being exhibited as a concept car, the RCZ was unveiled for the first time in public, in its definitive form, at the 63rd Frankfurt Motor Show.
AND FOR TOMORROW: A HYbrid4 RCZ Prototype
An extension of this thinking is the RCZ equipped with HYbrid4 technology. This RCZ is based on the same power train as the 3008 HYbrid4 which will be available in Europe in 2011: a 2.0 litre HDi FAP 120 kW in front and a 27 kW electric motor at the rear. This concept has emissions of only 95 g/km of CO2 whilst benefiting from a potential power output of 147kW and four wheel drive.
This reflects Peugeot's desire to offer HYbrid4 technology on various vehicles in its range, a development made possible thanks to its technical adaptability. Such vehicles that can be very different (SUV & coupé as an example).
PART TWO: ENGINEERING EMOTION
In 2010, three EURO 5 standard compliant engines will find their place under the expansive aluminium bonnet of the RCZ. High-performance engines in every sense of the term: generous torque and power, low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
1.6 litre turbo petrol SIX SPEED MANUAL
This state-of-the-art engine reflects the quintessential features of the RCZ chassis. With its maximum power of 147kW at 5,500 rpm and 275 Nm torque @ 1700 rpm (with overboost), the Peugeot RCZ benefits from acceleration of the highest order with 0-100km/h occurring in 7.5 seconds whilst its fuel consumption is 6.9L per 100km, combined with emissions of159 g/km of CO2.
For this purpose, this 4-cylinder engine with a capacity of 1598 cm3 combines all of the most recent technology to create a world first: Twin-Scroll turbocharger for performance and instant response at very low engine speeds, direct petrol injection, and variable valve lift coupled with variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust camshafts, for reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
The "engine melody" during acceleration has also been optimised through the specific development of the engine acoustics. Using Sound System technology a different sound is created according to the engine speed. In effect the Sound System makes it possible to deliver different harmonics according to the rate of acceleration. Like a real musical instrument, a vibrating membrane is activated a little time after drive-off, so the sound which is controlled and amplified by an acoustic duct, produces an enhanced "tune" over long distances.
1.6 litre turbo petrol TIPTRONIC AUTOMATIC SIX SPEED
This turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine achieves a remarkable synthesis of performance. The 1.6 litre turbo petrol engine is available with the new 6-speed sequential automatic gearbox. This gearbox strengthens the distinctive character of the RCZ by offering the ideal blend of driveability and fuel economy.
With 115kW of power and 240Nm of torque, this engine offers superb flexibility with a remarkable give and take between performance, drive-ability and fuel consumption.
The recently developed "AT6" 6 speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox is developed by Aisin Japan to specifications of Peugeot Automobiles. It features technologies that enable it to reduce fuel consumption and optimise CO2 emissions (approximately - 10 g compared to a previous generation gearbox): optimisation of the torque converter, reducing friction losses due to numerous features (reduced-drag clutch disc).
Indeed everything has been designed to improve the efficiency of the transmission. This allows the RCZ coupled with this automatic gearbox to achieve fuel economy of 7.3 litres/100 km with 168 g/km of CO2. Similarly, the quality and speed of gear changes (smooth, synchronised and responsive) have been fine-tuned: adoption of a direct-control hydraulic block, an electronic strategy that optimises rapid multiple downshifts.
Two driving modes are possible; one automatic, for smooth, tranquil, stress-free driving, which adapts to the driver's driving style, the other more active and responsive thanks to the sequential control.
2.0 litre HDi turbo diesel SIX SPEED MANUAL
With a capacity of 1997 cm3, this engine develops a maximum power of 120 kW at 3750 rpm and a generous maximum torque of 340 Nm available from 2000 to 3000 rpm. To obtain this level of performance it has a new generation ECCS (Extreme Conventional Combustion System) combustion chamber, a variable-geometry low-inertia turbocharger, a high-pressure pump allowing a pressure of 2000 bar in the common rail and solenoid injectors with eight apertures. This engine gives free rein to the potential for the RCZ in terms of road holding while limiting its fuel consumption to only 5.3 litres/100 km in the combined cycle, with CO2 emissions of 139 g/km.
HDi turbo diesel technology combines with a high-performance emission control system, the Particle Emission Filter (FAP), a self-cleaning system; it treats the gas resulting from the combustion of the diesel in the engine. The filter contributes to reducing the diesel particulates, bringing them to the measurable limit (0.004 g/km). This technology ensures the Peugeot diesel engine is a "clean" engine.
The RCZ 2.0ltr HDi is equipped with a Gear Shift Indicator. This device which meets future regulations visually indicates to the driver the best moment to change gear in order to optimise fuel economy and CO2 emissions.

DYNAMIC SUSPENSION
The renowned "passion" which Peugeot confers on its cars acquires its full meaning here. Based on the manufacturer's know-how in terms of driveability and road holding, the aim of the RCZ is to take driving pleasure to new heights.
The RCZ benefits fundamentally from a highly efficient suspension set-up developed from the marque's other platform 2 vehicles (McPherson type front suspension and rear torsion beam). In addition, the car's ride height and centre of gravity have been lowered by 20 mm and 40 mm respectively compared to a 308 Hatchback.
Furthermore, compared to the latter, the RCZ is wider (+30 mm) with wider front and rear tracks (+ 54 mm and + 72 mm). The suspension and dampers have been adapted accordingly and, with the addition of wider tyres (18'' or 19''), the end result is road holding of the highest order.
Lastly, when the RCZ is equipped with the 147 kW engine, the front axle incorporates a special lower anti-roll bar to make the car even more responsive and agile, while at the same time guaranteeing remarkable efficiency.
The hydraulic power steering is designed to offer accuracy and excellent responsiveness. To ensure maximum braking efficiency both in terms of power and endurance, the RCZ is equipped with generously dimensioned ventilated discs: a diameter of 302 mm and a thickness of 26 mm, and for the 1.6 litre 147kW (and the 2.0 litre HDi with 19" wheels) 340 mm in diameter and 30 mm thick.
To facilitate manoeuvres on steep gradients, all versions of the RCZ come with Hill Assist. This function is coupled as standard with ESP on the manual versions which includes an Intelligent Traction Control System -a sophisticated ASR which automatically adapts the traction of both front wheels according to the available grip levels, and of course dynamic stability control (DSC), electronic brake force distribution (EBFD) and emergency brake assist (EBA). The DSC, ASR and EBA functions can be disconnected simultaneously (ESP Off) so that drivers who are experienced and demanding can fully exploit the vehicle's capabilities.
AN ORIGINAL DESIGN DERIVED FROM AN EFFECTIVE PLATFORM STRUCTURE
The RCZ uses the much applauded "Platform 2" which is distinguished by its high torsional rigidity and build quality, which benefits handling, ride and excellent acoustic and reduced vibration properties. This platform is a versatile design and other vehicles which have evolved from Platform 2 include the 308 hatch and Touring, 308 CC and 3008 SUV. And now as a sports coupé, this platform has wide adaptability for the choice of body style.
PART THREE: EXTERIOR EMOTION
Sculptural, dynamic and elegant, the style of the RCZ offers harmonious and vibrant proportions based on a compact and original three-compartment coupé architecture.
The double-bubble roof and rear window are stunning engineering achievements along with the stylistic signature of the car in which every detail has been finished to the highest quality. Visually, the windscreen, black roof and dark-tinted rear windscreen create a sense of continuity richly defined by the two aluminium arches. From the side, the "step-down" at the door level creates an original link between the car's plunging front aspect and its muscular rear. Another distinctive feature is its wide aluminium bonnet which includes the front wings and further emphasises the RCZ's width.
The glass forming the RCZ double bubble is annealed (a combination of heating and slow cooling) and the curvature produced in this way. The rounded shape is obtained by heating this sheet of flat glass until its softening point is reached (the temperature is precisely controlled to around 565°), by the force of gravity (gravity formatting).
The sheet of glass is placed horizontally onto a mould (the moulds are either concave or convex) inside a bending furnace. The sheet bends and then takes on the required shape produced by the mould. The bending process is complete when the glass reaches ambient temperature using a precise cooling curve to prevent the appearance of stresses in the molecular structure of the glass.
The front feline look, a characteristic of the marque; the soft contours of the wings and the large diameter wheels, the spoiler and ruby-red LED rear lights with their crystal look create an appearance which combines sensuality and power, intelligence and distinction.
The front windscreen, roof and dark-tinted rear windscreen ensure a visual continuity strikingly set off by two aluminium roof arches. From the side, its unique profile creates an original continuity between the plunging design of the front and the flowing lines of the rear.
Directional Bi-Xenon headlamps provide a high intensity bluish-white light with triple the power of a standard bulb, thereby improving the night time vision and providing an easier and safer night driving experience. They are coupled with an automatic leveling function and headlamp washers. They also have a directional function which significantly improves vision when cornering. This feature is available as optional equipment.
An enveloping bonnet creates the impression of a front without wings and expresses Peugeot's motor sport heritage with a forward lifting bonnet providing access to the engine and front wheel arches.
OPTIMISED AERODYNAMICS DUE TO ITS SHAPE AND ACTIVE REAR SPOILER
The proportions of the vehicle (at height 1.36 m), the sculpted lines of the body and the double-bubble roof line are favourable to air flow, giving the car optimised aerodynamics. Despite large 18" wheels and a wider stance, the RCZ has a Cx of 0.32 and an excellent SCx of 0.67.
The adjustable active rear spoiler also contributes to this aerodynamic efficiency: it deploys in to two positions, according to the speed of the car, to ensure an ideal balance between fuel consumption and road holding. The first position (19°) activates at speeds of more than 85 km/h and folds back below 55 km/h, while the second position (34°) is activated at speeds in excess of 155 km/h returning to position one at 145 km/h.
Drivers can choose to activate the rear spoiler manually (to position two) by pressing the button located on the centre console.
PART FOUR: INTERIOR EMOTION
The interior of the RCZ instantly places the driver in a stylish, sporting, high-quality driving environment and instantly immerses the driver in a subtly elite ambience echoing the world of motorsport.
The sleek and streamlined lines of the fascia panel design slope gently, reminiscent of recent Peugeot models, and fit perfectly into the distinctive ambience of the RCZ.
The seats are simple in their lines and form and by having the head restraint integrated into the seat back, follow the tradition of other distinctive sports coupés. The front seats are trimmed in Nappa leather and have three-way electric adjustment – height, slide and recline with manual lumbar adjustment and seat heaters. The driver's seat also features a position memory function.
The use of high quality materials combines with the elegant contours to enhance the refined overall atmosphere. Beneath the sight line of the driver, mirroring the clock located in the centre of the fascia panel, the instrument panel dials are contained in metal cases, with photo-etched, back-lit markings.
The fascia panel is covered entirely with an innovative soft feel material, elegant in appearance.
As a further reference to its sports coupé heritage, the design of the instrument panel dials incorporates a background of carbon and rear brushed metal with white needles.
The RCZ offers two occasional seats, fully sculpted and perfectly usable, especially since the design of the roof with its double bubble offers extra headroom to rear passengers.
For a long weekend, the boot offers a capacity of 384 litres added to which are storage spaces under the floor. There is potential to increase this capacity further by folding the rear seat back down, which gives a maximum boot volume of 760 litres.
Meticulous attention has also been paid to the style and finish of the boot with carpet and chromed securing rings as standard.
Aesthetics combined with practicality.
PART FIVE: MAXIMUM SAFETY
SAFETY - OPTIMISED STRUCTURE
At the front, the structure of the RCZ incorporates a triple force channel to absorb maximum energy in the event of a frontal impact. Similarly, the arches, external side members and door stiffeners have been specified to ensure an optimal absorption strategy.
For side impact, door reinforcements, "C" post reinforcements and a heel plate force channel have been designed to afford optimal protection to passengers. At the rear, a beam at the level of the boot sill absorbs impact forces and ensures a good level of repairability.
ACTIVE BONNET
An active bonnet system has been developed to lessen the effects of impact involving a pedestrian, without in any way sacrificing the car's architecture or style. When the sensors at the front of the vehicle detect a collision, this pyrotechnic system activates the bonnet hinges, raising the bonnet by up to 55 mm in 0.1 of a second.
The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is the Bosch 8.1 system which includes Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Emergency Braking Assistance (EBA), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Traction Control (ASR) and Hill Assist. The system also includes a stability control system (CDS) using steering wheel angle sensors, yaw speed and lateral acceleration sensors to detect under-steer or over-steer and apply controlled braking and engine torque to maintain trajectory.
Intelligent Traction Control is a sophisticated system that allows the vehicle to move off and be driven efficiently in adverse road conditions (ice, snow, heavy rain, etc.). Under such conditions it automatically adapts its strategy by enabling more or less slip on each of the front wheels. This function is incorporated with the ESP (as standard) on all vehicles equipped with a manual gearbox.
Complete disconnectionof the electronic stability control (ESP), traction control (ASR) and emergency braking assistance (EBA) functions is possible with all engine combinations. Upon engine switch off, these systems will return to the "on" mode.
The braking equipment has been reinforced in relation to the 308 hatchback, guaranteeing a high level of efficiency, power and endurance of the braking.
SAFETY – MEANS OF RESTRAINT
RCZ has efficient means of restraint to protect each passenger in the event of an accident:
- 2 adaptive front airbags (60 litres driver and 90 litres passenger);
- 2 side airbags to protect the chest and pelvis of front passengers (10 litres each) installed on the side structure of the front seat;
- 4 three point seat belts with force limiters (and pre-tensioners at the front) combined with acoustic and visual fasten seat belt alarms for each seat.
PART SIX: SUSPENSION, STEERING & WHEELS
SUSPENSION
New RCZ suspension has been significantly enhanced to provide the grip and handling required and commensurate with a high performance sports car.
Building on the 308's already quality level of ride and handling, the RCZ has a significantly lower ride height and lower centre of gravity in comparison. In addition, the RCZ is wider by 30 mm, with wider front and rear tracks (+44 mm and +63 mm).
The front track increase contributes to improving the seating of the vehicle, the strength of the body and the stability, both in a straight line and in situations of deceleration or braking on bends.
The suspension is therefore adapted accordingly (specific design of the front wishbones, their articulation etc.), as are the dampers (increased diameter of rods and upper bearings, specific damping patterns) to ensure more stiffness and efficiency whilst maintaining comfort.
It consists of the following:
The front axle is a MacPherson strut type with a drop link anti-roll bar. The sub frame is attached at four points under the chassis legs and front floor. Each wishbone moves around two flexible mountings rigidly attached to the sub-frame. The very rigid front section (1500 daN) ensures rigorous guide accuracy while the rear (75 daN) works as a vibration filter.
The rear suspension is a semi-independent type with a deformable cross member. It consists of two suspension arms connected by a cross member and an anti-roll bar with all four components welded together. The cross member is made of "U" profiled sheet steel of 5 mm thickness. The anti roll bar is hollow and positioned inside the "U" section and welded to each arm.
To improve the comfort and noise level balance resulting from the major changes to the vehicle architecture and suspension, upgrading and enhancement was also made as follows:
- The axle has been attached to the body structure by two dual material flexible mounts, forward of the cross member;
- The damper units have been attached to the body structure by means of a polyurethane upper support by optimize filtration;
- A damper is installed on the rear suspension cross member to also improve the soundproofing of the vehicle.
Special features of the 1.6 litre 147 kW engine: When powered by this engine the front axle of the RCZ is comprised of special hub carriers, large in diameter and derived from Platform 3 (407). In addition, it incorporates a lower separation rod. These characteristics give the car even livelier and more agile road holding while ensuring driver confidence with precision and stability.
STEERING
The power assisted rack and pinion steering is controlled by a hydraulic electro-pump unit (GEP) with an output of 650 Watts, (compared to 580 Watts on 308) which varies according to vehicle speed, the speed of rotation of the steering wheel and the temperature of the power steering fluid. This allows for continuous adaptation of the power supplied and facilitates manoeuvres at low speed.
The RCZ steering is characterized by:
- A high level of precision, good centering and good road communication, with;
- A complete absence of transfers and vibration.
WHEELS
New RCZ features two wheel and tyre sizes:
18" "Original" as standard; these feature Continental 235 / 45 / R18W tyres on 8.0" rims and 19" "Sortilege" (available as a single option) featuring Continental 235 / 40 / R19W tyres on 8.5" rims.
