With pricing and equipment as such, the all-new Peugeot 307 will confirm Peugeot's status of being the new benchmark for buyers of cars in this category.
Peugeot 307 – A Sales Success Already
With the 307 just launched onto the Australian market, it has already achieved much success in Europe. Recently voted 'European Car of the Year 2002', the 307 is the class leading compact car in France, where it represents 5% of the total new car market. One of the most significant new cars to emerge from Europe this year, 300,000 307's will be sold this year, climbing to 550,000 in it's first full year of availability.
The success of the new 307 is driving up total Peugeot sales, with 1.2 million cars sold in the first eight months of 2001, an increase of almost 13% over the same period last year.
COMFORT, CONVENIENCE AND CHOICE
Three engines, two petrol and one HDi turbo diesel will be available at launch. They range in capacity from 1.6 litres to 2.0 litres and in output from 80kW to 100kW.
The sleek, stylish, almost monospace design of the Peugeot 307 disguises that it is one of the biggest cars in its class. A high seating position contributes towards outstanding space for five passengers and still leaves room for a large, almost cubic boot that can hold 341 litres of luggage with five passengers aboard and an impressive 1328 litres with the split rear seats folded.
Comfort and convenience are enhanced by a host of ingenious storage solutions. The glovebox is air-conditioned, allowing owners to keep drinks or snacks cool; slide-out trays beneath the front seats can hide valuables securely out of sight; and there are hooks for shopping bags in the boot.
CLASS-LEADING SAFETY FEATURES
The Peugeot 307 is one of the first cars in its class to feature six airbags as standard. Head and chest airbags for the driver and front passenger are supplemented by curtain airbags running the full length of the car to protect front and rear passengers' heads in the event of a side-on impact.
In addition, the Peugeot 307 has active front seat backrests which force the front head restraints to follow the movement of occupants' necks in a rear collision, preventing whiplash injuries. And the steering column collapses so that the brake pedal is moved away from the driver's feet. There are three-point safety belts and head restraints for all three rear passengers.
Standard active safety features include anti-lock brakes with an Electronic Brake Force Distributor (EBFD), which automatically apportions stopping effort between the front and rear wheels for maximum effect. The system also incorporates Emergency Brake Assist, which guarantees maximum braking effort in an emergency stop regardless of the force applied to the pedal by the driver. Once Brake Assist is activated, the hazard warning lights automatically come on to warn following traffic.
ADVANCED ELECTRONICS
Many of these advanced features are only possible because of the Peugeot 307's sophisticated multiplex wiring system, something usually found only in more expensive executive cars. This reduces the normal number of wires and connectors, improving reliability, while allowing more features to be interconnected. The 2.0-litre Peugeot 307 model for example comes equipped with light-sensitive headlamps and rain-sensitive wipers.
For security, the boot is automatically locked at speeds over 10 km/h, while the central locking can be activated from within the cabin as a further protection against opportunist thieves. Reinforced door linings and cowled and shielded locks provide additional first-rate protection.
A CAR FOR ALL TASTES
Peugeot designers have gone to great effort to create a user-friendly cabin space by ensuring
easy access, a choice of colours to suit all tastes and providing just the right amount of storage spaces and equipment to meet owners' needs.
The combination of wide-opening doors and a higher-than-normal seating position makes the
Peugeot 307 particularly easy to get into and out of. There is 1.43 metres of elbow room in the front and
1.46 metres in the rear. A large, cubic boot, free of suspension intrusions, gives 341 litres of usable luggage space beneath the parcel shelf and up to 1328 litres with the one-third/ two-thirds split rear backrests lowered to their flat position. The luggage area contains two hooks for holding shopping bags securely, a baggage net and a couple of side partitions. This is supplemented by exceptional storage space within the cabin.
The glovebox is air-conditioned, allowing drinks or snacks to be kept cool. It also includes a number of
tailored recesses for small items on the back of the lockable lid. There are optional slide-out drawers beneath the front seats for hiding valuables out of sight. Each front-door pocket is capable of holding a 1.5-litre drinks bottle upright, while those in the rear will take a half-litre bottle. In the centre console there are two drinks holders, a CD rack and space for another drinks bottle. A coin pocket is located on the edge of the driver's seat.
THE NEW PEUGEOT 307 SETS NEW SAFETY AND SECURITY
STANDARDS
The new Peugeot 307 offers customers exceptional safety and security by using the latest in technological innovations. A multiplex wiring system, which reduces the normal number of wires and connectors, improving reliability while allowing more features to be interconnected, enables the 307 to be fitted with items previously available only on expensive executive cars.
SAFETY
The 307 is one of the first cars in its class to have six
airbags as standard. It has intelligent face-level front
airbags which react according to the speed and
severity of an accident, body-protecting side airbags
for the two front occupants and curtain airbags
running the full length of the cabin which cushion
front and rear passengers' heads in a side-on collision.
There are head restraints and three-point seats belts
for every passenger. The belts on the four outer seats
have force-limiting devices to prevent bruising from
the webbing.
The 307 is also one of the first cars in class with
active anti-whiplash front seat backrests. In a front or
rear collision the front head restraints are designed to
follow the movement of occupants' necks.
At the same time the upper part of the steering
column retracts while the lower portion prevents the
brake pedal from moving backwards, thus preventing
injury to the driver's chest and feet.
Standard active safety features include anti-lock
brakes with an Electronic Brake Force Distributor
(EBFD), which automatically apportions stopping
effort between the front and rear wheels for
maximum effect. The system also incorporates
Emergency Brake Assist, which guarantees maximum
braking effort in an emergency stop regardless of the
force applied to the pedal by the driver. Once Brake
Assist is activated, the hazard warning lights
automatically come on to warn following traffic.
The windscreen wipers of the 307 have been
designed to sweep outwards towards the screen
pillars in a butterfly pattern, thus ensuring maximum
clearance of the windscreen, which is the largest in
class with an area of 1.46 square metres.
The Peugeot 307 has an impressively strong structure
designed to protect through progressive deformation
in an accident. A network of reinforcements and
boxed cross-sections in the central door pillars, side
rails, floor, roof and dash area keeps the passenger
cell intact after impact.
SECURITY
The Peugeot 307 also protects against theft. An
immobiliser and plip central locking are standard on
every model. A button on the dash allows occupants
to lock the car from inside to guard against
opportunist thieves.
Further protection is provided by an innovative boot-locking
system which is activated once the car
reaches a speed of 10 km/h. To defend against
professional thieves, every Peugeot 307 has reinforced
door linings with cowlings that shield the locks.
THE NEW PEUGEOT 307 -TECHNOLOGICAL
INNOVATIONS AID HIGH
SPECIFICATION
The new Peugeot 307 is one of the most
technologically-advanced and fully-equipped cars in
its class. Its extensive list of standard safety, security,
comfort and luxury items is unmatched in many far
more costly executive cars, and it offers features
which mark it out as one of the most forward-looking
cars on the road today.
Such advancements are made possible by the 307's
sophisticated multiplex wiring system, which reduces
the normal number of wires and connectors,
improving reliability while allowing more features to
be interconnected. A BSI (Built-in Systems Interface)
controls several different networks operating comfort,
safety and mechanical equipment through a single
circuit. The BSI prioritises all the information coming
to it so that, for instance, safety matters take
precedence when necessary.
Multiplexing allows the 307 to be specified with light-sensitive
headlamps and rain-sensitive wipers. It
permits the driver to select personal settings for a
number of functions for instance, the headlamps can
be set to stay on for up to 45 seconds after the car is
locked to illuminate the walk from car to front door.
It ensures that the boot is automatically locked at
speeds over 10 km/h and that the hazard
warning lights automatically come on during
emergency braking.
THE NEW PEUGEOT 307:
'ENGINEERED TO BE ENJOYED'
The 307 maintains and enhances Peugeot's
reputation for building cars which are simultaneously
fun to drive, produce a smooth ride, yet are extremely
safe in their responses.
It offers buyers a range of powerful yet flexible petrol
and turbo diesel engines to suit all needs, allied to
manual or automatic front-wheel-drive transmissions
with carefully chosen gear ratios. Sequential manual
shifting is available with the automatic for the
first time.
A highly-rigid body structure forms an ideal platform
for the suspension, which is designed to ensure
perfect tyre contact with the road at all times, precise
control even in adverse conditions and a supple ride.
The power-assisted steering uses a hydraulic electric
pump to vary the response so that the driver gets
precise reaction with just the right amount of help for
the circumstances. And the powerful all-disc brakes
have the latest electronic systems to provide rapid,
fade-free stopping with no danger of lock-up
regardless of conditions.
THE ENGINES
Two petrol engines and one HDi turbo diesel, all four-cylinder
units, will be available in the Peugeot 307
from launch. The new car has been designed to
accommodate all the current and future Peugeot
power units.
The 1.6-litre (TU5JP4) engine has a capacity of 1587cc
and 16 valves in an alloy head on an iron block, it
develops 80 kW at 5800rpm and 147 Nm of torque
at 4000rpm. It gives the 307 a top speed of 190
km/h, with 0-100 km/h taking 11.7 seconds on 5
door versions. It's CO2 output is 169g/km. 85% of
maximum torque is available from 2000rpm and 95%
between 3300rpm and 5000rpm, ensuring impressive
driveability.
A new light-alloy sump contributes towards rigidity
while reducing vibration. The twin overhead camshaft
cylinder head is also made of light alloy. It is of the
crossflow type and features self-adjusting hydraulic
tappets with anti-return valves that help to maintain
constant oil pressure within themselves, thus reducing
valve noise.
The 2.0-litre (EW10J4) engine was first seen in the
Peugeot 406. It is an all-alloy 16-valve twin overhead
camshaft unit of 1997cc producing 100 kW at
6000rpm and 190 Nm of torque at 4100rpm. In the
307 it gives a top speed of 205 km/h and 0-100 km/h
in 9.8 seconds on the 5 door, and has a CO2 rating
of 188g/km.
It also endows the 307 with superb flexibility of at
least 169 Nm of torque which is available all the way
from 1800rpm to 5750rpm. The engine
characteristics allied to relatively short gearing
give excellent performance with good overall
fuel economy.
The 2.0-litre (DW10) 66 kW HDi turbo diesel engine is
a 1997cc single overhead camshaft unit giving an
excellent combination of performance, economy,
refinement and low emissions. It develops its 66 kW
at 4000rpm and a maximum 205 Nm of torque at
1900rpm. Powered by this engine, the 307 reaches a
top speed of 179 km/h, covers 0-100 km/h in 13.8
seconds, with CO2 emissions of 138g/km.
Introduced in 1999, this cast iron unit with alloy head
was the first of a new generation of high-pressure
direct-injection turbo diesels from Peugeot featuring
common-rail fuelling technology. Designed to produce
extra torque while meeting tougher emissions targets,
it develops 72% of its maximum pulling strength
from 1200rpm to 3400rpm and therefore permits the
use of long gear ratios (44.5 km/h 1000rpm in fifth)
for outstanding economy.
The common-rail high-pressure injection system
supplies fuel via an electronically-controlled pump to
a communal rail, or pipe, which acts as a communal
storage point.
The rail is connected to five-hole electronic injectors
with intelligent electronic control heads which send a
fine spray of diesel directly to the combustion
chambers. A tiny amount of fuel is first pre-injected
to warm the cylinders before the main spray, giving
smoother combustion which reduces noise levels and
emissions while improving low-speed performance.
All Peugeot 307 engines meet Euro-3 emissions
standards. An on-board diagnostic system monitors
emissions and warns the driver in the event of a
malfunction. A plug-in socket enables the service
technicians to find and rectify any fault quickly
and easily.
TRANSMISSIONS
All Peugeot 307s have a five-speed manual gearbox
mounted at the bottom of the engine. An automatic
gearbox which allows drivers manual control through
a Porsche Tiptronic-style sequential shift will be
available for the 1.6- and 2.0-litre petrol models.
The MA gearbox used on the 1.6-litre petrol models
has been modified with reinforced gears and bearings
to give smoother shifting and increased comfort.
SUSPENSION
The front suspension of the 307 uses inverted
pseudo-McPherson struts with triangulated lower
wishbone attachments and an uncoupled anti-roll bar.
At the rear there is a deformable U-shaped
crossmember located by two arms, and a hollow
anti-roll bar.
The system is designed to give precise, independent
control of each wheel while maintaining the
suspension geometry whatever the driving conditions
to ensure precise tyre contact with the road.
The two front forged-steel wishbones move within
two vertical elastic rubber bushes. The front one
ensures the precision of the steering while that at the
rear primarily operates to suppress noise. Mounting
the bushes vertically allows the suspension to be
more compact.
A ball-and-socket joint at each side of the car links
the suspension unit to the cast-iron pivot. The upper
part of the pivot is gripped by an aluminium case
which holds the hydraulic shock absorber and a steel
coil spring with offset centre. The upper support,
containing the load-bearing element, is
double-insulated.
The independently-linked anti-roll bar is joined to
each load-bearing element by a small connecting rod
attached to the ball-and-socket joints. This
arrangement gives fast, accurate indication of the
slightest amount of body roll.
The streamlined U-shaped crossmember at the rear is
made of sheet steel and the two suspension arms are
fixed to its ends. The hollow anti-roll bar is positioned
within the U of the cross member and attached to
each arm. This arrangement keeps weight to a
minimum, takes up little space and gives excellent
wheel clearance for top-quality handling.
The controlled torsion of the crossmember and anti-roll
bar assembly ensures maximum grip for the
outside wheel during cornering and benefits
directional precision. The whole assembly is attached
to the body by four elastic rubber bushes with two
cylinders encased in steel forward of the crossmember
which ensure proper guidance of the axle assembly,
and one on the upper part of each shock absorber.
Coil springs, mounted parallel to the shock absorbers,
complete the construction.
STEERING
The Peugeot 307 has power-assisted rack-and-pinion
steering with a hydraulic electric pump assembly to
give variable assistance.
It works by varying the hydraulic pressure on the
steering rack according to car's speed and the rate at
which the steering wheel is being turned. Maximum
help is provided for parking or when sudden evasive
action necessitating a violent turn of the wheel is
called for.
The steering column is in three sections. The upper
section allows both reach and rake adjustment of the
wheel's position relative to the driver. In the event of
a severe impact, the upper portion retracts by up to
50mm to prevent chest injury to the driver.
The lower portion slides and collapses within a sheath
by up to 95mm. At the same moment it also slides on
a ski, mounted on the flange of the pedal support to
reduce the risk of injury to the driver's feet from the
brake pedal.
BRAKES
All Peugeot 307s have disc brakes at each wheel. The
front ones, 283mm in diameter and 26mm thick, are
ventilated. Solid discs of 247mm diameter and 9mm
thickness are fitted at the rear. A brake pressure servo
of 9 inches assists the hydraulic braking system.
All models are equipped with anti-lock brakes
incorporating an Electronic Brake Force Distributor
(EBFD), which automatically apportions stopping
effort between the front and rear wheels for
maximum effect.
The system also incorporates Emergency Brake Assist,
which guarantees maximum braking effort in an
emergency stop regardless of the force applied to the
pedal by the driver.
WHEELS AND TYRES
Several wheel-and-tyre combinations to meet the
needs of comfort, handling and style are available.
They vary from 6x15-inch rims fitted with 195/65R15
tyres on the 1.6-litre petrol and the 2.0-litre Hdi
models, to the 6.5x16-inch alloy rims with 205/55
R16V tyres fitted to the 2.0-litre petrol 307.
THE NEW PEUGEOT 307
DESIGNED FOR LOW COST
OF OWNERSHIP
The new 307 maintains Peugeot's reputation for
producing cars which are inexpensive to own. Ease of
maintenance and repair has been designed in from the
outset, while its innovative safety and security
technology helps it preserve/improve the highly-competitive
insurance rates of its predecessor, the 306.
The 307's bumpers shrug off minor parking knocks,
while all-round side protection strips guard against
paintwork damage from carelessly-opened doors in
car-park bays.
AFFORDABLE TO REPAIR AND INSURE
The 307 meets the stringent European criteria for
repairability after substantial accidents up to 15 km/h.
A front beam mounted on shock absorbers ensures
no damage to the car's main structure.
In the event of a more severe accident, low-cost
repairs are made simpler and cheaper by the 307's
innovative construction. A new type of fixing, the
plasti-rivet, has been widely used. This allows rapid
unclipping of components like the front headlamp
units. In a crash the lamp units are designed to 'pop
out' and up, limiting bodywork damage.
This will help to ensure favourable insurance rates,
which will also benefit from the 307's outstanding
safety and security.
Standard active safety features include anti-lock
brakes with an Electronic Brake Force Distributor
(EBFD), which automatically apportions stopping
effort to the front and rear wheels for maximum
effect. The system also incorporates Emergency Brake
Assist, which guarantees maximum braking effort in
an emergency stop regardless of the force applied to
the pedal by the driver.
The 307 is one of the first cars in its class with six
airbags as standard. It also features anti-whiplash
front seat backrests and a collapsible steering column
which retracts and pulls the brake pedal away from
the driver's feet.
An immobiliser and central locking are standard on
every model. A button on the dash allows occupants
to lock the car from inside to guard against
opportunist thieves.
Further protection is provided by an innovative boot-locking
system which is activated once the car
reaches a speed of 10 km/h.
To defend against thieves, every Peugeot 307 has
reinforced door linings with cowlings that shield
the locks.
Fuel economy is aided by the weight-saving measures
adopted on the 307, including composite front wings
and an aluminium bonnet.
Routine maintenance costs are reduced by the 307's
long servicing intervals of 20,000 kilometres for both
the petrol and the HDi turbo diesel models.
The 307 will be sold in Australia with a 2-year,
unlimited kilometre mechanical warranty, 12 years'
anti corrosion guarantee and 3 years' protection
against paintwork defects.
