BMW K 1200 LT in detail

BMW’s K 1200 LT Luxury Tourer has been developed to an even higher standard in its engine and technical features, further improved and enhanced by new, interesting features, the absolute highlight in technology being the electro hydraulic main stand.

Together with its optical improvements and new colours, the K 1200 LT offers the highest conceivable standard in terms of superior riding qualities, long-distance touring with supreme comfort, and prestigious looks.

Engine now developing 85 kW (115 bhp) and drivetrain even quieter thanks to high-rise gear teeth.

The engine has been upgraded to an even higher standard to fulfil the customer’s wish for even greater performance on the road: improving the cylinder charge cycle and focusing in the process on the camshaft, throttle butterflies (with diameter increased to 36 mm or 1.42´´), the intake funnel and snorkel, BMW’s engine specialists have succeeded in boosting engine power by 15 per cent to 85 kW (115 bhp), with maximum torque up by 5 Nm to 120 Nm or 88 lb-ft.

With all gear teeth coming in high-rise configuration, the improved five-speed gearbox is quieter and more comfortable than ever before, the individual gears coming into mesh even more smoothly and precisely.

Extra stability thanks to larger castor, enhanced comfort provided by the TDD spring strut.

Castor extended by 15 mm or 0.59´´ now gives the K 1200 LT even greater stability on the road, once and for all eliminating the slight unrest on the front wheel at low speeds sometimes criticised by a few riders.

A further feature is the new spring strut with a travel-dependent damping (TDD) spring strut now fitted on the rear wheel. Already featured successfully on BMW’s cruiser models and the R 1150 GS Adventure, this high-tech spring strut technology with the damping effect increasing as a function of spring compression allows a very comfortable spring strut set-up while nevertheless offering adequate reserves to prevent damper contact under high loads and on very rough surfaces.

New seat – extra comfort, enhanced ground contact, and even better handling.

The seat of the K 1200 LT is also a new development from the ground up. Consistent redesign of the seat shell and geometry integrates the rider much better and more consistently into the motorcycle and enables even the somewhat shorter rider to easily reach the ground. Indeed, a new measurement standard referred to as step length was used to determine the ideal height of the rider’s seat: Measuring the full length between the rider’s feet on the ground up and down his legs, this yardstick considers not only the absolute, geometric height of the rider’s seat, but also its shape and width at the front end relevant to riding conditions.

As a result, riders of a body height down to 1.69 metres or 5´  7´´ readily acknowledge the new seat as very good. And this gives even the somewhat shorter rider a strong and secure position when standing up on his machine as well as easier handling on the road.

Electro hydraulic main stand automatically elevating the machine.

The electro hydraulic main stand developed by BMW Motorrad is an absolute highlight in modern motorcycle technology. The advantages of this new feature are an unprecedented enhancement of comfort as well as an enormous increase in safety on a heavy motorcycle of this calibre. Now, even with the motorcycle fully laden and with a passenger on the rear seat, the rider is able to automatically elevate his machine at the touch of a button on the right-hand handlebar.

Building up pressure in a hydraulic system, the electric pump operated in
this way reliably moves out the main stand without requiring manual assistance or intervention.

Design and body features – two-piece headlight, chrome package featured as standard.

The sophisticated elegance of the K 1200 LT is reflected perfectly by the machine’s updated, modern design. Retaining most body components and the overall design concept, the K 1200 LT now looks even more harmonious, more modern and refined than ever before thanks to just a few striking changes and detailed improvements. As on the previous model, the surface finish is consistent, clear and harmonious from front to rear.

From the front, the special look of the updated K 1200 LT is borne out in particular by the redesigned headlight now split into two halves: Beneath the new free-form low beam headlight there is now a separate high-beam headlight harmoniously merging into the fairing. Also featuring free-form technology, the high-beam unit, like the low-beam headlight, comes with a clear glass lens improving overall light intensity by approximately 10 per cent over the former headlight.

The front wheel mudguard has also been redesigned: Now larger and extending further down, it continues the typical line of the side fairing and the engine spoiler, again in the interest of greater harmony.

The two-tone paint concept accentuates the special design of the K 1200 LT, technical components being finished in magnesium-coloured metallic paintwork to give the motorcycle a particularly elegant and lean look. Indeed, the metallic paintwork colours available harmonize beautifully with the chrome-package now featured as standard and comprising additional components over and above the items already finished in chrome in the past. The following parts and components, therefore, now come in high-gloss chrome providing a particularly sophisticated touch:

  1. Footrests for the rider and passenger.
  2. Footrest supports for the rider and passenger.
  3. Rubbing trim surround front and rear.
  4. Mirror housings.
  5. Windshield support caps.
  6. Grab handle on the top case.
  7. Caps on the brake and clutch units.
  8. Brake and clutch levers.
  9. Logo and vent panel on the side air intakes.

The range of colours is Light Yellow metallic for a particularly sporting and modern look, Ocean Blue metallic for classic elegance of the highest standard, and Dark Graphite metallic accentuating the motorcycle’s luxurious character. The seat, in turn, comes in either Black or “Greige”, an elegant blend of Grey and Beige.

New instrument cluster with an information flat screen.

The instrument cluster has also been thoroughly updated and improved in its looks and design. One of the highlights of the redesigned cockpit is the new information flat screen with its wide range of information for the rider.

Clarity and style have also been improved, the high-resolution display
presenting the following data:

  1. Mileage plus two trip counters (Trip master).
  2. Coolant temperature, air temperature.
  3. Gear currently in mesh.
  4. All functions of the on-board computer.
  5. Radio information.
  6. Fuel gauge.
  7. Time.

Optional extras and special equipment.

production line (optional extras) or – either upon delivery or subsequently –
by the dealer (special equipment).

  9. Height-adjustable, chrome-plated passenger side boards. \*
  10. Preparation for BMW Motorcycle Navigator II.\*

(Standard on BMW K 1200 LT SE)

Central locking significantly facilitates the process of locking and securing the motorcycle: All the rider has to do to lock the top case, side cases and storage compartment is press a button. The tank lock is intentionally not secured in this process.

Central locking is available only in conjunction with the anti-theft warning system and ground illumination automatically activated once the rider deactivates the anti-theft warning system and, on request, when switching off the ignition, the lights then illuminating the ground around the motorcycle when parked and thus significantly facilitating the process of getting on and off.

The navigator support fitted at the factory is firmly integrated into the motorcycle above the radio control console, since this reduces the cost of installation versus subsequent fitment. This navigator preparation kit comes together with the cable for connecting the BMW Motorcycle Navigator II.

This new generation of the BMW Motorcycle Navigator combines a high standard of control ease with accurate guidance and destination finding functions. A further advantage is that the rider is able to plan and calculate his routes on the PC and then call up the data required conveniently on his motorcycle.
