It began with quintessential Aussie paddock bashing

Since a teenager, motorbikes have been a played a major part in Fabienne Phillips' life. It was then when she inherited a pre-60s Mobylette from her French grandparents.

For a girl who previously loved nothing more than to paddock bash on a dirt bike, this took riding to another level and a great respect for bikes was born.

It wasn't, however, for another 26 years after Fabienne restored the Mobylette and placed it in storage after the family's country property was sold, that Fabienne rekindled her passion and love of bikes and is now the proud founder of Girl Torque.cc

The road to Girl Torque.cc

It took a chance meeting with a guy who owned a 1000cc sports bike to get Fabienne back in the saddle, well, should we say pillion saddle! Perhaps it was the corny excuse of arm-wrapping, or perhaps it was the exhilaration of being on the open road, but yes, she sat up on that high, tiny seat for a year and it was the best learning experience she could have wished for. With Fabienne's passion for bikes and the freedom they provide rekindled, it was time to fly solo.

After successfully passing her Ls and Ps, Fabienne bought her first bike, a Honda CB400. With constant practice and road time, she outgrew it in less than eight months, progressing to a Triumph Street Triple 675, which she currently owns. With three long-haul international rides under her belt and another upcoming, Fabienne's never looked back, and she's completely immersed in the world of bikes.

Girl Torque.cc is born

Throughout Fabienne's bike riding journey, she's experienced many incredible places. Her bike has opened up her world. She relishes the empowerment, freedom, individualism and adrenalin that controlling a machine gifts. Most of all, she enjoys being in the moment.

Fabienne founded Girl Torque.cc to empower Australian women, regardless of experience, to ride motorbikes more safely, confidently and stylishly than they ever imagined possible. She is passionate about sharing her knowledge and wants you to experience how a bike expands your world.

One-On-One With Fabienne Phillips

It was only relatively recently - some seven years ago - that Fabienne Phillips was introduced to motorcycling and, as a consequence, her life changed considerably. Combining her flair for style with her passion for motorcycling, Fabienne shifted the direction of her career to helping women discover and enjoy the thrills and lifestyle choices opened up through riding a motorbike. Here, in her words, Fabienne talks about bikes, stereotyping, wanderlust and how feminine insights can change the way you feel on the road.

I cannot, simply get enough of motorbikes. I love testing, experimenting and feeling how different bikes handle different roads and conditions, so I've ridden many types of bikes, including the beautiful Ducati Paul Smart, the Triumph Scrambler, the BMW S1000RR, Aprilia RSV4, the unique Ural and the list is still growing. Today, I ride a Triumph Street Triple 675, and a Kawasaki ZX10R plus I also experience the thrill of dirt bike riding.

I'm addicted to the freedom of the open road, and there's no doubt that motor biking has fuelled a different kind of wanderlust to the type I experienced Before Bikes (BB). As a pillion, I loved riding the Ducati Diavel and the Multistrada throughout California. I've participated in California Superbike days, Moto DNA women's track days and have often ridden with groups of mixed standards through country Australia. From riding my CB400 around Tasmania in every weather condition imaginable and gruelling rides through New Zealand's rugged South Island to mastering the technical roads of Italy Corsica and Sardinia - I find the open road gloriously mentally and physically challenging.

Motorcycling has predominately been a man's world and, in the past, there have been limited opportunities for women to participate to the extent they can today. Women are discovering motorcycling as a sport and activity where they can both express themselves individually and also as a part of a mixed or even women's only social group. That said, there is still stereotyping of women in the sport, and there is certainly a long way to go in areas of bike suitability, apparel, equipment and accessories.

As a female motorcycling enthusiast, and a person that has experienced so many styles of bikes and has ridden in all conditions one could ever encounter, I have an insight that not too many riders have - men or women. Every motorbike model feels different. They handle differently. They have characters. Different kinds of women need different kinds of bikes for so many reasons.

It's also about finding the balance on not only teaching all the technical road craft skills, but also being understanding to those who are new to riding and ensuring they feel safe and comfortable while leaning out on the road. We don't operate within a confined and controlled space; we operate out on the Sydney Metro roads giving our clients real life road experience. This could simply be starting in quiet streets and working our way up at their pace.

As programs are individually tailored, they vary in the amount of time spent with each. Some are beginners who need assistance with purchasing their first bike, gear, etc as well as slowly building their confidence to get out on the open roads; it can be timely. Others that are already out there want training for a specific a manoeuvre or help with regaining their confidence after a scare.

In closing, Girl Torque.cc is a motorcycling business created for women by a woman. I founded it to fill a gap in the growing market and inspire women in what I consider a male dominated arena. I help women with all levels of experience in so many different ways, giving them the freedom to take control of their newfound passion. Through Girl Torque.cc, I genuinely want to see women progress but, most of all, it's about their bike, their freedom and their style of fun. It is a thrill for me to share my experience and passion in an industry I love.
